Boston, MA (The Joy of Food) — With a name like Bagelsaurus, I was really worried this was going to suck. No good, I thought, could come from a place whose logo sports a bagel-clad dinosaur. But the joke was on me.

Everybody searches for that perfect bagel, and in Boston and environs, a top-shelf bagel is not hard to find. Some cities have all the luck.

You won’t have to worry about greatness here, or freshness. A loyal and patient clientele of students and neighbors practically guarantees a warm-out-of-the-oven bagel on every visit. They’re selling ‘em faster than they can make ‘em.

The bagels are ideal with that lovely outside crunch and inside chew in every bite with a thick slick of cream cheese in the middle. The everything bagel has that crispy oniony schmutz that lingers, tempered a little by the cool creaminess of the cheese.

There are more savory types on the menu than sweet or herbaceous, which is fine by me, and they get creative with the house-made spread flavors. Mustard butter anyone? I’m told it goes swimmingly with the brilliant pretzel bagel.

To say that the shop is tiny is an understatement. There’s barely room for the line down the middle, but they’ve managed to fit a few tables on one side and a stand-up bar on the other. You’re better off taking your fresh bagel or sandwich to go, unless you like someone’s face in your hair while you eat. It gets a little cramped inside, and sitting and talking leisurely is impossible.

Even if you see a line down the block, which you often will, it’s worth the wait if you live, work, or go to school in the area. Go early, though, since extinction happens when the bagels run out for the day.
