San Diego, CA (The Joy of Food) — If you, like me, enjoy yeasty donut goodness, Donut Bar will be your kryptonite.
In theory, Donut Bar represents most of what I rail against when it comes to the un-balanced American diet: too many calories, too much fat, too much sugar, and it’s full of harmful preservatives and additives, in this case being food dyes that leave my teeth a light shade of colors not found under the sun.
In reality, here I show up on occasion to pick up a godforsaken Homer’s Donut, a wonderfully fresh yeasty gigantic birthday cake-flavored donut glazed with bright pink icing and topped with confetti sprinkles. “Everything in moderation” I lie to myself as I happily shove the entire donut in my face like a fat little kid and lick every last bit of frosting out of the box, conflicted that I find this pink-topped doughy ball of goodness to be one of life’s little treats.
But that’s just me, and your mileage may vary. Ultimately, sugar-bomb choices of all sorts abound. Homer’s is on the basic end of the scale, as are salted caramel, vanilla bean, and red velvet donuts. For a more elevated, if not refined, option, you might like the thing known as the Strawberry Split, a gigantic sugar-raised donut that’s cut in half and filled to the brim with whipped cream and strawberries. If cake-batter donuts are calling you, there’s a classy Unicorn donut that’s topped off with buttercream, sprinkles, and chocolate ears. Jim Beam whiskey, Vermont maple syrup, and bacon are also in the building.
Some of the appeal is in the price; donuts go for between $2 and $5. Note it’s not uncommon for them to sell out and close early. There are the ‘regular’ daytime hours or special evening ‘encore’ hours on Fridays and Saturdays when the ‘bar’ part of their name takes center-stage, complete with wine and beers on tap.

They have very creative donuts but the amount of sugar in each one is too extreme for me. Eat some for me!
This is most definitely a ‘guilty pleasure’ type of place for an occasional visit.
